DATAVIZ

Paris 2024

We are two second-year students in the Bachelor of Multimedia and Internet Professions (BUT Métiers du Multimédia et de l’Internet) program who have created this DataViz project. The main goal of the project was to develop a visual representation of a large amount of data and make them more accessible and representative through interactive graphics.

Given that Paris will be the host city for the 2024 Olympic Games, we wanted to foster interest in this event by presenting statistics on the number of medals throughout the history of the Games. We invite you to enjoy observing the various correlation links between the presented data, comparing the achievements of different nations over more than 100 years, and congratulating the absolute champions of the Games.

Olympic Leaders:
Top 5 Nations on the Podium

The question of which country has achieved the greatest Olympic success is undoubtedly complex, influenced by numerous factors such as population size, economic resources, the level of investment in sports, climatic conditions, and even historical stability. It is evident that countries with a stable history and territorial integrity over the last century have a distinct advantage.

In this graphic, we aim to provide a simplified representation of Olympic success, focusing solely on the quantity of medals and their respective characteristics. Our point system assigns 3 points to gold medals, 2 points to silver, and 1 point to bronze. This approach allows for a straightforward comparison based on medal counts, although it may not capture the full scope of a nation's sporting achievements.

Olympic Advantages:
Do Host Countries Win More?

The privilege of hosting the Olympic Games is both an honor and a responsibility. The home-field advantage, the support of local fans, familiarity with the venues... Does hosting games come with a competitive advantage?

This streamgraph represents the medals won by all host countries since 1994. This year serves as a reference point because, starting from 1994, the modern system of a four-year period was established. Prior to that, both the Summer and Winter Games were held in the same year. The decision to stagger these events was made to address the logistical challenges of hosting two major international sporting events in a single year. The years when the Winter Games occurred are marked in blue, while the Summer Games are denoted in red.

The Summer Olympic Games typically offer around 300 medal sets, while the Winter Olympics provide only about 100. Therefore, a correlation of 3 to 1 between the medals won in Summer and Winter Games is considered normal. This correlation suggests that a country is striving to excel in a wide variety of sports.
If this correlation is higher or lower, it can indicate whether the country is stronger in Summer or Winter Games, which may be connected to climate and cultural politics.
